Students Greet the Olympic Flame

Two students from Coleg Ceredigion were given the honour of welcoming the Olympic flame as it visited the National Library of Wales on Monday 28th May.

The Library welcomed the flame with a reception of 6 torches from previous Olympic Games, including the torches from München 1972, Seoul 1988, Athens 1996, Atlanta 1996, Athens 2004 and London 1948 (the last time the games were held in London).

Andy Marshall and Hannah Tyson, Media Production students at Coleg Ceredigion joined members of National Library staff and two Aberystwyth residents to hold two of these torches to welcome the flame. Hannah greeted the flame holding the torch used at the Seoul Olympic Games in 1988, whilst Andy held the very torch used by Muhammad Ali to light the flame at the Atlanta Games in 1996.

The students were invited following the success of their collaboration with the National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales, as their short film project, Precious Life, was awarded the Cultural Olympiad Inspire Mark. The films were created and edited by Media students at Coleg Ceredigion using original footage held at the National Screen and Sound Archive, and were shown at public screenings at the National Library last year.

Andy Marshall commented “This was an amazing experience, and I’m so grateful to the National Library of Wales for giving us this opportunity!”.
