Welsh Language Commissioner Meri Huws visited Coleg Ceredigion’s Cardigan campus last week to launch an innovative new App which the college’s Bilingualism Team have developed in conjunction with students. The App which has been named “App Whap” is a tool which assists students to complete written work in Welsh. The college is leading the way in developing a learning resource which is both innovative and accessible to learners in this age of mobile devices. Development of the college as a leading bilingual institution is one of Coleg Ceredigion’s strategic objectives and as such the college actively encourages its students to study bilingually and through the medium of Welsh so that they leave college with skills which will enable them to contribute fully in a bilingual society. During her visit Ms Huws took the opportunity to talk to students and staff and to look at the ways in which the college is actively promoting the Welsh language.

The Welsh Language Commissioner, Meri Huws, said:

“I am pleased to be present at the launch of this innovative app. As technology becomes increasingly important in our society and the way we live our lives the Welsh grammar app will enable students to access information quickly and easily.

“I hope that this resource will be used widely, and will give greater confidence to Coleg Ceredigion students as well as Welsh speakers in general, to use the language in all aspects of their lives.”

Principal, Jacqui Weatherburn, said “I’m absolutely delighted that the Commissioner has had the opportunity to see the excellent work that we are doing to promote the use of Welsh to all our learners. The app is the first of many initiatives which the college aims to launch across both campuses over the coming months.

Mayor of Aberystwyth, Cllr. Dylan Lewis, recently returned to Coleg Ceredigion to celebrate the achievements of its learners at the Annual Awards Ceremony, having been a student at the college himself over twenty years ago.

Dylan studied the BTEC National Diploma in Business at the college before progressing onto Aberystwyth University to study Law. He is currently serving as Mayor of Aberystwyth having been elected last year.

After the ceremony, Dylan was reunited with his former Business Lecturer, Theresa Jones, who is now Director of Curriculum at the Aberystwyth Campus, and Allison Coleman, Chair of Governors, who was one of his Tutors at Aberystwyth University.

Dylan commented “It’s been great to come back to the college, and to see how far the college has progressed during that time. The award winners deserve our heartiest congratulations for their achievements at tonight’s ceremony”.

Theresa Jones, Director of Curriculum, commented “ I remember Dylan as being a hard working, well motivated student who had a clear goal to study Law at University. It’s great to be able to keep in contact with former students and see how they have flourished since leaving the college”.

Second year Performing Arts students present “Carmen” on Wednesday 27th (1pm and 7pm) and Thursday 28th March (1pm and 7pm) in the Rehearsal Studio, Aberystwyth Campus.

“Drawing inspiration from Prosper Merimee’s novella and Bizet’s opera, the students have explored the themes of love and jealousy, influenced by the German choreographer Pina Bausch and her approach to relationships. Carlos Saurus’ film of “Carmen” also stands as an influence in terms of cultural context and body language. Here we see Carmen’s journey from a place of power to displacement and death as she becomes the catalyst for the temptation, heart break and destruction that follows.”

The performance lasts 40 minutes and is free of charge.

The Spring term has proved to be a very busy time for one of our Carpentry students at Coleg Ceredigion.

Following his success at the Regional Skills Competition in February, Carwyn Davies has been awarded the silver medal in the Welsh National Final held in Dolgellau recently. At the end of the gruelling competition, Carwyn secured a worthy second place having completed work to a very high standard throughout the day.

In addition, Carwyn recently received the shield for “Apprentice of the Year” at the college’s annual awards ceremony recently, presented by Catrin Miles, Mayor of Cardigan.

Meurig Davies, Carpentry Lecturer at Coleg Ceredigion commented “Carwyn is a very conscientious student who completed work of a high standard both here at the college and with his employer, Dylan Davies, Cartrefi’r Cwm. Congratulations to Carwyn on his achievement, and we wish him all the best for the future”.

It was celebration time at Cardigan Guild Hall last week as students, staff, family and friends along with governors, local employers, Mayor of Cardigan, Cllr Catrin Miles, and Cardigan Town Councillors gathered for the annual Coleg Ceredigion Cardigan Campus Award Ceremony.

A total of 26 awards were presented this year by the Chair of Governors, Allison Coleman. During her address, Allison highlighted that the awards were presented for a variety of achievements ranging from academic excellence to outstanding effort on a personal level. She congratulated each student for their hard work and achievements.

The college was also very pleased to be presenting two additional awards for the first time this year: an award presented on behalf of Soroptimist International Cardigan and District by President Lila Saywood and Programme Officer Patricia Ford and the second a perpetual shield donated by Cardigan Town Mayor Catrin Miles and presented to the Apprentice of the Year. Many congratulations to Louise Redfearn, Catering and Carwyn Davies, Construction for winning these awards respectively.

In her closing address Principal Jacqui Weatherburn, Principal, commented, “Our annual Award Ceremony is an excellent opportunity for the college and the community to recognise and celebrate the efforts and achievements of our students. All tonight’s award winners deserve our heartiest congratulations and we wish them every success in the future.”

The ceremony was followed by a splendid buffet at the college Training Restaurant which was prepared by the Catering students and staff.

Coleg Ceredigion’s newly formed Rugby Team recently had an opportunity to show off their skills in a match against a team from the University of Wales, Trinity Saint David.

The team’s first game was played at Maes Radley in Cardigan, where after a gruelling 80 minutes, the University of Wales Trinity Saint David’s side claimed victory, with a full time score of 30-20. The Man of the Match however was awarded to Coleg Ceredigion Bricklaying student Aaron Tomkinson.

The Coleg Ceredigion side was coached by Derek Burton and managed by Martin Morgan, both of whom are members of staff at the college. The college would like to thank Mr. Colin Phillips for refereeing the match, and Cardigan RFC for the use of their facilities.

Taking on an experienced side was a challenge for the young team but one which they relished. No doubt this will be the first game of many over the coming months with a rematch against UW Trinity St David’s already on the cards.
