This qualification is knowledge-based and is for experienced staff who wish to develop their leadership potential in order to progress to a leadership and management role within the childcare sector. Being knowledge based, learners can complete this qualification before they have attained a leadership role.

The qualification is suitable for learners who have successfully completed the following qualifications or recognised equivalents:

  • Level 2 Children’s Care, Play, Learning and Development: Practice
  • Level 3 Children’s Care, Play, Learning and Development: Practice
  • Level 3 Children’s Care, Play, Learning and Development: Practice and Theory
  • legacy qualification listed in the Social Care Wales – Qualifications Framework for Social Care and Regulated Childcare in Wales
Programme Features

This is a flexible course, designed to suit learners who prefer to continue working alongside the qualification.

Programme Content

The level four Preparing for Leadership and Management in Children’s Care, Play, Learning and Development qualification consists of the following three units:

  • Leading child-centred practice
  • Theoretical frameworks for leadership and management
  • Understand how to lead and manage effective team performance

 To achieve this  qualification, learners must achieve 60 credits in total. All units in this qualification are mandatory.

Progression and Employment

The level four Preparing for Leadership and Management in Children’s Care, Play, Learning and Development course provides the knowledge to help managers take their first step into a leadership role, and for progression on to:

  • Level 4 Professional Practice in Children’s Care, Play, Learning and Development with Specialism
  • Level 5 Leadership and Management of Children’s Care, Play, Learning and Development: Practice providing the learner is in a suitable job role
  • Opportunities for further study and professional training are being explored with universities across Wales
Method of assessment

This qualification is assessed through a combination of internal and external assessment.

For the external assessment learners must successfully complete:

  • A project that contains a series of tasks based around a proposed change to practise 

 For the internal assessment learners must successfully complete:

  • A series of tasks, involving both oral and written responses
Entry Requirements

You will be required to undertake a successful interview and be formally assessed using the WEST toolkit.

You will also require a satisfactory enhanced DBS check.

Additional Costs

You will need to provide your own stationery. Sufficient time must be permitted by the workplace to allow regular meetings between assessor, learner and manager.
