Children’s Care, play, learning and development: Practice Level 2

This qualification is primarily for those working in:

  • Regulated child care with families and children under the age of 8
  • NHS children’s services for those working with families and children aged 0-19.

It is designed for learners in work based learning.

It is suitable for:

  • Learners 16 years+ working in a support role in childcare
  • Learners have completed Level 2 Children’s Care, Play, Learning and Development: Core
  • Learners in work and undertaking Level 2 roles and responsibilities
  • Learners returning to the workforce looking to refresh their knowledge and skills.

We strongly recommend learners complete level two childcare, play, learning and development: core qualification before, or alongside this qualification: this will be a requirement for practice set by Social Care Wales.

Programme Features

The qualification is practice based and assesses learners’ knowledge and competence to practise in employment.

This is a flexible course, designed to suit learners who prefer to continue working alongside the qualification.

Completion of this qualification enables learners to work as a qualified level two childcare worker in a supervised capacity. The qualification also prepares for progress to:

  • Level 4 Professional Practice in Children’s Care, Play, Learning and Development

Learners will need to fulfil additional age and experience related requirements for some leadership roles.

Programme Content

The qualification will assess learners’ knowledge and practice through their work and will be able to demonstrate that they

  • Understand, and apply in practice, the principles and values which underpin children’s care, play, learning and development
  • Understand, and apply in practice, child-centred approaches
  • Make a positive contribution to the sector through their own practice
  • Reflect on practice to continuously improve
  • Understand job roles and functions within the sector
  • Use literacy, numeracy and digital competency skills within their role.
Method of assessment

The level two Children’s Care, Play, Learning and Development: practice qualification is assessed through a combination of internal and external assessment. Candidates must successfully complete:

  • An externally set, internally marked set of tasks
  • A portfolio of evidence
  • A discussion with their assessor
Entry Requirements

You will be required to undertake a successful interview and be formally assessed using the WEST toolkit.

You will also require a satisfactory enhanced DBS check.

Additional Costs

You will need to provide your own stationery. Sufficient time must be permitted by the workplace to allow regular meetings between assessor, learner and manager.
