Coleg Sir Gâr and Coleg Ceredigion have a dedicated support team to support learners with additional learning needs, disabilities and medical needs. 

Learning Support staff are available on every campus to support learners with their studies.  We embrace and celebrate neurodiversity and, as a college, welcome learners with diverse ways of learning to our inclusive learning environment. Our team works closely with curriculum staff to ensure that teaching and learning is accessible for all learners.  All support is person-centred and designed to build your independence in the college environment and beyond.

How do I access support?

Support is available through the Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA).  The DSA is a non-means tested, government funded scheme which may pay for support you might need.  This is to ensure you are not disadvantaged during your studies.  

The DSA scheme requires evidence to be forwarded to your funding body (e.g. Student Finance Wales) with your DSA application.  In order to be eligible, applicants must meet the the definition of ‘disability’ as set out in the Equality Act 2010.  Our team can assist you on your application

What support is available?

If you are eligible, person-centred support may be in the form of:

• One to one specialist teaching to assist with organisation and planning, assignment writing skills, from one of our specialist lecturers
• Access to a Study Assistant to support you with organisation, time management, research, etc
• British Sign Language interpreter
• Specialist equipment
• Assistive technology including software
• Examination adjustments such as extra time

Once your DSA application has been approved, you will be asked to attend a Needs Assessment to identify the specific requirements of your support.  This will take place at an approved Access Centre.  We can support you through this process.  

Once you have received confirmation from your funding body that support has been approved (DSA2 letter), we can organise your bespoke support.

Who is eligible to receive support?

You may be eligible to apply for DSA if you have an additional learning need (such as a Specific Learning Difficulty), a disability or a medical condition.  You will need to provide evidence such as a Diagnostic Assessment report by a psychologist or qualified assessor, or a letter from a medical professional.  Since requirements change, it is useful to check the funding body website (e.g. SFW, SFE) for updates.

You can apply before you start your course, or if you are unsure, we can support you through the process. 

Diagnostic Assessments

Once you are enrolled on your course, you may be eligible to receive a diagnostic assessment to establish if you have a specific learning difficulty.  The resulting report may be used as evidence to apply for DSA depending on the outcome of the assessment.
