Programme Description

The course provides a challenging and extensive programme of study, combining academic learning and research with real world case studies. Students will not only learn about business tools, techniques and concepts but also develop essential expertise. Valuable employability and transferable skills can be gained throughout the course with many tasks relating to teamwork and leadership, resilience, and project management.

This course will open up a number of opportunities and can lead to a wide variety of job roles within the public and private sectors. 

The course also allows learners to explore and develop an entrepreneurial mindset and skills through developing a business idea Dragon’s Den style.

Coleg Ceredigion works closely with local businesses to motivate and inspire learners using realistic scenarios for learning and assessment work providing students with an opportunity to discover the business environment on a local level as well as internationally.

Programme Features

The course prepares students for the wider opportunities a business qualification can provide through a series of learner led and tutor facilitated activities including engagement with local businesses, teamwork, leadership tasks, and event management with potential opportunities for participation in a placement abroad as well as seeking work placement opportunities in the local area.

Visiting speakers and entrepreneurs coming to the college provide real world examples of business challenges and an opportunity to learn more about business from experienced business leaders. With a strong focus on Wales and its place in the world there are ample opportunities to both take part in and develop Welsh language and cultural activities and business opportunities. 

Programme Content

The learning programme covers the following content areas:

  • Management

  • Marketing
  • Finance
  • Business environments

The optional units have been designed to support progression to business courses in higher education, and to link with relevant occupational areas. They cover content areas such as:

  • Human resources
  • Accounting
  • Financial services
  • Marketing
  • Law
  • Retail

All learners will follow a Skills Pathway in which they will develop their literacy and numeracy skills for employment. Students who do not yet have the necessary GCSE grades at C or above will have additional teaching and support to study for either GCSE or Essential Skills Qualifications depending on prior GCSE grades.

Progression & Employment

This qualification builds on a core of underpinning business management knowledge, skills and understanding. Learner progression could include Business Management, or a specialist business related degree, such as Event Management, Human Resource Management, or Marketing. Alternatively, employment in a variety of professions such as management, financial services, marketing, retailing or public services is an option. 

The course also provides opportunities for students to link up with and pursue roles within SMEs (small- to medium-sized enterprises), innovative new start-ups, charities, non-profit organizations and NGOs, as well as turning a bright idea into your own business.

Method of Assessment

The course is assessed through a range of assessment types, dependent on subject, using one of these assessment approaches.

  • External Assessments taken under specified controlled conditions, marked by Pearson. awarded.
  • Internally assessed work and assignments subject to external standards verification.

Entry Requirements

5 GCSEs at grades A*-C, which includes either English Language or Welsh (1st Language) and Maths. Or successful completion of L2 qualification in relevant vocational subject at Merit or above.
