The course provides a programme of study that is achievable within one year.
It encourages progression for those learners who have already completed a level two motor vehicle maintenance and repair course previously.
The course provides the training and development needed for students with a keen interest in the automotive sector who wish to progress to higher education or degree level. It covers a broad base of automotive engineering and, although practically orientated, focuses on the theory behind the diagnostic technologies involved within the automotive industry.
Successful completion allows you to progress to higher level learning and university level learning
There is also the possibility of progressing onto the automotive apprenticeship programme, which allows you to gain further competence within the automotive industry.
You will be shown how to carry out various industry standard practical procedures which include tasks such as fault code diagnostics, transmission and driveline faults and MOT checks/procedures.
You will be assessed carrying out these tasks, where you are required to compile a practical portfolio.

These are then followed by five online multi choice tests, which are spread out throughout the academic year.
You will also follow a skills pathway in which you will develop your literacy and numeracy skills for employment. Students who do not yet have the necessary GCSE grades at C or above will have additional teaching and support to study for either GCSE or Essential Skills qualifications depending on prior GCSE grades.
Assessment is based on practical tasks, portfolio of evidence and also five online theory GOLA tests.
You will be required to have achieved:
Five GCSEs at grades A* to C, which includes either English language or Welsh (first language) and maths.
Or successful completion of a level two vocational qualification in a relevant subject at merit or above.
Learners with prior relevant industry experience will also be considered.
