Programme Description

The Level 3 Health and Social Care (Principles and Contexts) course will provide a comprehensive and challenging programme of study that will develop your knowledge, skills and understanding within the context of health and social care services, including the current issues in relation to Health and Social Care in Wales, and understanding of the human body and some problems that can occur when the body systems do not function as intended.

This two-year qualification is knowledge-based and designed for post-16 learners who want to develop their knowledge of the health and social care sector

It will provide a sound basis for learners who want to progress to higher education or to work in the care sector. You will be required to undertake 100 hours of sector engagement over two years to prepare you for further study at the degree level or to improve your skills and qualifications should you wish to seek employment in the health or social care sector.

Programme Features

The course is delivered mainly in the classroom; however, you will be required to undertake 100 hours of sector engagement, including a work placement, workplace visits, guest lectures and attending external conferences and events. This sector engagement will provide you with experience in the health or social care sector, tailored towards your future career aspirations.

All staff members delivering this course have vast experience working in the Health and Social Care or Health Science sector; therefore, a number of local and national contacts have been nurtured to offer additional opportunities to all learners.

Programme Content

This qualification will enable you to develop and demonstrate knowledge, skills and understanding within the context of health and social care services, including:

  • Principles of care and safe practice
  • Factors affecting individuals’ growth and development
  • Rights of individuals
  • Supporting individuals at risk
  • Working in the health and social care sector
  • Human health and disease
  • Medical science research methods
  • Medicines and the treatment of diseases
  • Clinical laboratory techniques

Progression & Employment

This qualification provides underpinning knowledge, skills and understanding, and a range of options to reflect the breadth of careers within the Health and/or Social Care sector.
This course offers a wealth of opportunities for those looking for a career such as Nursing, Social Care, Midwifery, Radiography, Biomedical Sciences, Social Work, Psychology, Law, Criminology, Ecology and many other careers.

Recently our students have gone on to study and qualify, for example, as Nurses, Radiographers, Physiologists, Research Scientists, Teachers, Social Workers, and Healthcare Managers or have gone on to work as healthcare support workers or work in social care.

Method of Assessment

Units are assessed through a combination of internal assessment and external assessments. Assessments may take the form of essays, reports, presentations, discussions, exams etc.

Entry Requirements

All applicants will need a positive reference. Suitability for this course will be assessed at interview.

GCSEs: A minimum of 5 GCSEs grades A* - C, including English language or Welsh first language. Mathematics needs to be grade E or above.

Learners progressing from an L2 course at Coleg Ceredigion will have different entry requirements, including successful completion and engagement on the current programme of study, proven skills development, good attendance levels and in receipt of a positive reference.

Additional Costs

All learners are required to pay an administration fee of ÂŁ25 prior to enrolment.

Enhanced DBS - ÂŁ44 (dependent on work placement).

Occasional departmental trips and visits associated with the course – all costs will be minimal where possible.
