BE KIND

A college initiative that aims to encourage compassion and community charity has been launched at Coleg Sir Gâr and Coleg Ceredigion.

The Cariad (meaning love) initiative, was launched on Valentine’s Day at seven campuses in Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion.

It aims to encourage and recognise volunteering and charity work as well as recognising positive contributions and acts of kindness across the colleges.

Since the launch of Cariad, Coleg Sir Gâr and Coleg Ceredigion will nominate a charity to fundraise for every year and this year, Wales Air Ambulance was chosen along with seven other charities, representing every campus across the colleges.

Elin Wyn-Murphy, community coordinator at Wales Air Ambulance visited Coleg Sir Gâr’s Graig campus in Llanelli to support Cariad celebrations which included performances, beauty treatments and bake sales.

Other campuses across the two counties arranged events including charity car washes at motor vehicle centres, catering students put their patisserie skills to the test and Students Unions donated pool table proceeds.

Nikki Neale, senior director for learning experience for Coleg Sir Gâr and Coleg Ceredigion, said: “We were delighted to welcome Elin Wyn-Murphy to kick-start our Cariad launch as we want to celebrate the positive contributions our learners and staff make to the college and the wider community.

“Students and staff have really embraced the Cariad scheme and in a world where we see so much negativity, it is wonderful to see the both colleges focusing on and promoting kindness and positivity.

“Nominations can be made for both staff and students who have demonstrated exceptional fundraising or caring behaviour and they will received an individual Cariad award which are hand-made by our carpentry teams at Ammanford campus.”

Lee Waters AM, showed his support for the launch during a visit to the college to congratulate our UK Skills medallists.
