One step closer to Shanghai

A student representing Coleg Ceredigion is one step closer to Shanghai, representing Squad UK at the international WorldSkills competition.

Hedydd Davies, who competed in restaurant service was invited to join the prestigious WorldSkills UK Talent Development Programme after excelling in its national skills competitions, the finals of which were held at WorldSkills UK LIVE at the NEC in Birmingham.

Selected as one of the five to join the Talent Development Programme, Hedydd as well as two other members have advanced to the next stage of the programme, with the eventual winner boarding the plane with the rest of Squad UK.

Graduating from the college’s level three catering course last summer, Hedydd has since been working at Crwst, a popular establishment in Cardigan.

The WorldSkills competition, which will next be held in Shanghai, China in 2021, takes place every two years and is known as the skills olympics.

The competition will feature over 1000 of the world’s most talented apprentices and students competing in over 50 different skills as they battle it out to be named world champion in their chosen skill.

Hedydd will now continue her training programme with WorldSkills UK, supported by Coleg Ceredigion and will face the ultimate selection test in Spring 2021 when the team that will compete at WorldSkills Shanghai will be named.

According to Hedydd: “I feel very fortunate to be able to advance in this competition.

“It’s an amazing experience and I’ve learnt new skills as well as meeting people from all around the UK.

“I’m also grateful to Coleg Ceredigion and the tutors for all their support and advice so far during this process.”
