College welcomes health event
Coleg Ceredigion recently welcomed Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol and Hywel Dda Health Board to the Aberystwyth campus as part of their health tour.
Organised by both organisations, the aim of the event was to highlight the importance of being fluent in Welsh in the health and social care sector, especially when working with vulnerable members of society.
The event included various guest speakers from the health industry, including paediatric nurses, pharmacists, apprenticeship nurses and adult nursing students.
All speakers shared their personal experience of being able to deal with patients bilingually, highlighting the importance of being able to speak Welsh as many patients feel more comfortable engaging in a conversation through the medium of Welsh.
According to health and social care lecturer Sara Jones: “It was wonderful to welcome all speakers from various health and social care sectors to the college.
“The event itself gave students a valuable insight into the importance of patient care and wellbeing, and for many patients, being able to communicate through their mother tongue is an important element.”
