Success for Gavin

Former Coleg Ceredigion’s access to higher education student Gain Mckay has recently been awarded the 2019-2020 Keith Fletcher Memorial Access to HE Student Prize in the outstanding academic achievement category.

The national access to higher education student prize celebrates and acknowledges the hard work and commitment that the access to higher education students put to their studies.

Gavin decided to study a higher education diploma in health sciences at the college’s Aberystwyth campus in order to pursue a career in paramedic science and in doing so decided to leave behind a secure job and steady income.

Throughout his time at the college, Gavin volunteered and worked within the health care industry at Bronglais A&E and Saint John’s Ambulance Service to gain valuable experiences and to add to his knowledge and skills set.

According to access to higher education tutor Jennifer Glenc: “Gavin McKay is a testament to how dedication, commitment and ambition can unlock an individual's potential, and proof that adult learners can achieve their goals at any age or stage in life.

“His unwavering dedication and consistency in his work has gifted the NHS with an individual who will make a great difference to the individuals he will encounter throughout his new career.”

Gavin’s hard work and perseverance resulted in him achieving the highest amount of distinctions possible on the diploma and securing himself a place to study paramedic science at Swansea University, which he has been studying since September.
