A happy new year to you all; we hope you've had a good Christmas break. As we look forward to this term, our priority is to keep you all safe and continue learning with minimal disruption.
You should attend your Campus in the normal way, unless you are told otherwise by your Faculty. If any of your lessons need to be moved online, course leaders will be in touch via Google Classroom/Chat by Wednesday 5th January.
Welsh Government has asked that all learners take three lateral flow tests a week before attending college on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings and report their results here. Free test kits can be collected from Campus Offices.
This term, all learners are required to wear face coverings in classrooms, libraries, workshops , studios and on transport at all times unless medically exempt. Masks can only be removed in refectories and cafes when eating or drinking.
Please take up an opportunity to get vaccinated/boosted as soon as possible. Information can be accessed here.
If you have any covid-19 symptoms, please self-isolate and book a PCR test and do not attend college until you have a confirmed negative result .
If you have any questions or concerns with regard to your return to college, please contact your course leader/personal tutor before you attend.
Given the current uncertainty as we lead into Christmas, we have taken the decision to organise two planning days on Tuesday 4th and Wednesday 5th January.
There will be no teaching on these days. At this stage, we anticipate that face to face delivery will resume from Thursday 6th January. Any changes to this plan will be communicated through our website and via social media over the Christmas period.
Many thanks for your ongoing support and please accept our apologies for any disruption caused.
Over the next couple of months, the Welsh Government is aiming to increase the number of vaccinations delivered to our population through our Mass Vaccination Centres.
In Hywel Dda we have Mass Vaccination Centres in Llanelli, Newcastle Emlyn, Aberystwyth, Carmarthen, Haverfordwest and Tenby.
To support the patient flow and numbers of patients coming through these Centres, volunteers play a key role as car park marshals and/or meet & greet volunteers, without volunteers the Centres would find it hard to manage.
We are asking if you would be interested in supporting one of our Mass Vaccination Centres in your area as a volunteer. Shifts available will be:
9am – 1pm, 1pm – 5pm or 5pm - 9pm
Helping as a volunteer would provide a terrific opportunity to undertake some community work, which can support your Duke of Edinburgh Awards, Welsh Baccalaureate and UCAS applications.
If you are over 16 years old and interested in helping, please contact us by emailing:
HDD.FutureWorkforceTeam@wales.
We have today received confirmation from the Minister for Education that face coverings MUST be worn in all spaces where social distancing of 2m cannot be maintained. This will be in place for the rest of the term. Therefore, from tomorrow, Wednesday 1st December 2021, all staff and students will be required to wear face coverings throughout the College (including classrooms, workshops and staff offices where 2m cannot be maintained).
Large meetings of staff will also move online.
There are only a few exemptions:
All those medically exempt from wearing face coverings
Small meetings where 2m social distancing can be maintained
Offices where 2m social distancing can be maintained OR other mitigating factors, ie, perspex screens and ventilation are in operation.
Regrettably, no indoor Christmas events can take place that encourage people to gather together and no educational trips will take place for the rest of term. Pre arranged parents evenings and student interviews may go ahead, with appropriate mitigation in place (Perspex screens, ventilation, 2m social distancing and masks).
Sincere thanks for your ongoing co-operation in these challenging circumstances.
Thank you for your continued support during the autumn-winter term.
Since the start of September we have seen unprecedented levels of lateral flow and PCR testing, enabling us to find more cases. The offer of testing remains voluntary, however having consulted with public health officials and considered the latest data we recommend that settings continue with the LFD asymptomatic testing offer whilst they remain open in December and into the new year. At which time, officials will again review the available data and communicate any changes as soon as possible.
Whilst settings are closed, LFD tests are still available, free of charge to anyone over the age of 11 to test twice a week (every 3 or 4 days) without any COVID-19 symptoms. You are encouraged to take a test:
In the new year, we encourage staff and learners over 11 years to test twice with LFD (3 or 4 days apart) in the week before returning to school or college and to then continue testing regularly twice weekly for two weeks after the start of term in January. Individuals should use their own stock of LFDs or if their setting is closed, order from the community channel if additional supplies are needed.
We are also considering how testing can be used in the longer term as part of a suite of measures within the Local Decision Making Framework for schools and post-16 learning providers. Further details on this topic will be shared as soon as possible.
Hello everyone
This has been one of the most challenging years on record in education and indeed for life in general. However, on reflection, it has been truly remarkable what the College has achieved and I am so pleased as to how everyone in the College has pulled together to ensure our learners and staff were as safe as possible and that learners were able to progress in their learning.
Following the successful rollout of the vaccination programme I am positive about the future, and providing no further Public Health issues arise in the coming weeks and months, I am confident of a return to a new normal in September, with features similar to practice before the pandemic began.
The Board of Coleg Sir Gar and Coleg Ceredigion and I would like to thank you all for the way in which you have dealt with a number of different challenges this year and have been reassured in the way in which we have all supported each other.
Have a wonderful summer, continue to be kind to yourself and each other, and above all stay safe.
Andrew
After Easter, we will return to a similar delivery model that we operated for most of the Autumn term: i.e.
As noted above, contact groups will be operational once again. These will be as small as we can feasibly make them to minimise disruption in the event of a positive test arising.
Voluntary lateral flow testing (LFT) will be available to all staff and students attending site. Any staff or student testing positive will be asked to isolate and attend a PCR test at their local testing centre. Only positive PCR tests will lead to further action within contact groups by the College.
Social distancing of 2m by staff from colleagues and students will still be required.
Good ventilation will continue to be essential in all teaching and public areas.
Excellent hygiene practices will still be necessary and hand gel and wipes will continue to be widely available.
It will be necessary to wear a face covering in all communal parts of the College. In classrooms and workshops, where contact groups will be operational, it will be optional.
All College refectories will re-open during the daytime. Face masks may be removed when eating in cafes and refectories. Zoning will continue to be operational in large refectories where this is possible.
The College transport network will be available and it is very likely that connecting service buses will be back to full timetable. Face coverings will be worn by all learners when travelling on college transport (unless there is a medical exemption).
College libraries will be open each day, on all applicable sites. Students not scheduled to attend College on a particular day, will be able to pre-book a limited number of study places in the library if needed.
The Gym at Llanelli will be open for curriculum and assessment purposes only, but not more widely to staff or the public.
The outdoor sports pitches at Llanelli will be available for curriculum, assessment and training purposes, but no competitive matches will be possible. They will also be available for public hire under the same terms and conditions.
The riding arenas at Pibwrlwyd will be available for curriculum, assessment and training purposes. They will also be available for public hire for clinics, but no competitions will be possible.
Salons and training restaurants will be open for curriculum, assessment and training purposes, but not open to the wider public. Students may practise techniques on members of their contact groups if needed.
There will be more flexibility, with evening opening for some activities.
Work placements for FE and Traineeship learners can be arranged (or resumed), subject to up-to date health and safety and risk assessments being carried out.
As ever, this approach will be guided by advice from Welsh Government and is subject to change at very short notice.
Please note it may be possible, with sufficient headroom and appropriate WG advice, to relax some of the measures outlined above, earlier than anticipated.
We look forward to welcoming everybody back.

Collect a test from the campus office. Carry out the test at your home and follow the instructions provided. The result will be available within 30 minutes.
Depending on the result, you will need to act as follows:
Positive Test – Book a confirmatory PCR test at a testing centre, ideally within 24 hours of the LFD. Self-isolate immediately for 10 days. Do not attend any college site or meet with college students. If the PCR test is negative, you can return to college provided that the PCR test was taken within the 24 hour period and you have not subsequently developed any symptoms.
A negative PCR result from a test taken more than 24 hours after the LFT will mean that you must continue to self-isolate from the date of the LFT. You must log the result online or by phoning 119 according to the NHS instructions provided and inform the college.
Negative Test – Log your result online according to NHS instructions provided and attend college as normal. You will need to inform the campus office of the result.
Void Test – Take another test. If the second test is void, you must book a PCR test. In this event, there is no need for you to self-isolate until the result of the PCR test is known.
If the PCR result is positive, you must self-isolate from the date of the PCR test. Void tests should also be logged online.
As staff and students return to college sites, everyone has the opportunity to collect free Lateral Flow Tests (LFTs) from campus offices. Many people with Covid-19 have mild, or even no symptoms but can still spread the virus. The tests provide reassurance to you and your loved ones that you are clear from COVID-19 while you are attending college. You can complete the test yourself in the comfort of your own home, twice a week. Results are available after 30 minutes.
While no-one is required to take a LFT, the Welsh Government are recommending that college staff and students do a test on Sunday and Wednesday evenings each week while you are attending college sites. You will be asked to complete a brief consent form when you collect your test. A full instruction guide is provided with the test.
More information about LFTs is available here:

February 9 2021
We are really pleased to inform you that from Monday 22 February 2021, a small number of further education and work based learning students will be able to return to college for teaching and assessment purposes. Initially, this will focus on students studying:
Students will receive an invitation from their tutor asking them to attend on a specific day and time and no student should attend unless specifically invited. This is critical for student and staff safety.
During this first phase, students and staff should be aware that:
We recognise this will be a challenging period for both students and staff, but we are confident this can be managed effectively and that this will help greatly in allowing students to catch up with essential teaching and assessment.
We sincerely hope that this is the first, albeit small, step in returning to on-site delivery at the College and a wider return to the campuses by all students and staff will be achievable later this academic year.
Following today's announcement (5 February) from the Education Minister, we are planning a phased and limited reopening from 22 February for small numbers of vocational learners.
More details will follow early next week.
Welsh Government has today confirmed that we will continue to be in lockdown for the next 3 weeks and that remote learning and home working will continue until at least half term.
Please note that Coleg Ceredigion's Llanbadarn buildings are not being used as a COVID testing centre.
Our neighbours Aberystwyth University have opened up the Thomas Parry Library, an adjacent building on Llanbadarn Campus, as a centre for carrying out these tests. As you come onto the campus from the main road, turn right at the roundabout to the car park and access to the Thomas Parry Library is down the bottom of the hill.
To protect our staff we are limiting access to Coleg Ceredigion Buildings to permitted visitors only.
Stay Safe.
Online learning will continue until at least Friday 29 January in schools and colleges in Wales (the next review date) and if there is no significant improvement in case rates by then, until half term (Friday 12 February).
A further review would then be held to look at a potential return on Monday 22 February.
Following yesterday’s announcement by Welsh Government, the College will continue to deliver all its provision online until 18 January 2021.
Normal course timetables will operate for all types of provision and tutors will contact students through Google classroom to confirm day to day arrangements.
Students will continue to be supported online by the Wellbeing and Learner Support teams and any students wishing to access support should contact their tutor in the first instance.
Where assessments or examinations cannot be rescheduled, the college will offer these as planned, on campus, during this period.
Where possible, all commercial, fee paying courses normally delivered on campus will be rescheduled to later in the year.
Staff will be asked to work from home unless it is essential for them to attend campus to support ongoing functions, e.g. online delivery, assessment, examination, library click and collect, estates related matters, IT maintenance, provision of learning devices, essential financial or administrative services to ensure business continuity.
During this time, all cafes, salons, restaurants, gyms, riding arenas, studios, workshops, meeting rooms and sports pitches will remain closed.
Further updates will be posted on the website and through social media as they are received from Welsh Government.
Thank you for your ongoing support and patience with this very challenging situation.
December 11 2020
Further Education colleges across Wales have collectively agreed that face to face teaching will commence from 11 January 2021. Please see press statement issued by Colegau Cymru here:
This means that in the week commencing 4 January 2021, teaching will continue to be delivered online. All campuses will remain open for essential functional and support staff who need to work on site or teaching staff who wish to deliver from their classroom or workshop.
With increasing Covid-19 case numbers across South Wales, we have taken the decision to move all of our teaching on-line with for the period Friday 11th December to Friday 18th December.
We have taken this action to enable continuing course delivery for our learners in the last week of term and to try to minimise disruption for students and staff over the Christmas period.
Therefore, Thursday 10th December will be the last day for on-site delivery before Christmas and college transport will not run after this date.
Due to the rising number of positive COVID -19 cases in the Cardigan area, we have taken the precautionary step to transfer all courses at the Cardigan Campus online for the next two weeks (Monday 23rd November – Friday 4th December).
We are working closely with Ceredigion County Council and the health authorities to minimise the risks to learners and college staff and prevent transmission of the virus.
We will post further updates on our social media and website as soon as we have them.
Dear Learner,
The college has received confirmation of a confirmed positive test for COVID-19 associated with a member of your Extended Diploma Level 3 Health and Social Care Course at Aberystwyth Campus.
The college has been informed by the regional Test, Trace and Protect (TTP) team that as this is currently an isolated case. No other members of the group are required to self-isolate.
We would like to take this opportunity to remind you that if you, your son or daughter or anyone you live with, begins to display the following symptoms you must all stay at home and follow advice from Public Health Wales:
If you feel unwell and you need medical advice, please phone NHS 111 or visit their website 111.wales.nhs.uk, or call your local GP.

Temporary Closure of Coleg Ceredigion’s Aberystwyth Campus.
Following a meeting with Ceredigion County Council staff this morning, we have been made aware that a number of Aberystwyth University students have tested positive for Covid-19.
In view of the rise of positive Covid-19 cases in the Aberystwyth area we have taken the decision to move campus-based teaching for our Aberystwyth students to on line delivery for the period Tuesday 29th September to Friday 2nd October.
This will mean that there will be no students attending lectures on the Llanbadarn campus during this period.
While there have been no positive Covid -19 cases among Coleg Ceredigion students or staff to date, we have taken this temporary precautionary measure to ensure the continuing safety of our college community.
We will review this decision on Friday 2nd October together with the County Council and University in light of the Covid-19 situation in the Aberystwyth area at that time.

Dear all Yesterday the Minister for Education announced plans for schools and colleges to ease back into onsite operations. The statement made by the Minister is here https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-52895374
For all Colleges in Wales, this means an opening of campuses from June 15th 2020. However, we have decided that the earliest we can achieve this will be from June 22nd 2020. This is to ensure that all possible steps that we need to take to ensure appropriate staff training, safe working practices and operations can be implemented cautiously and successfully. Our paramount concern in this process will remain the safety of all staff and learners. The College is currently completing risk assessments for all elements of operations that it will be undertaking in the summer months, prior to September.
These will be shared with the Board of Directors, the Health and Safety Committee, Union officials and all staff prior to the commencement of any onsite work. Training will be afforded to staff prior to them receiving learners on campus.
This process will be underpinned with the very latest Welsh Government advice. Priority working areas during the summer months are those areas where learners need assessments to achieve their "license to practice" and to provide on campus support for vulnerable learners. Much of our work will continue online and many staff will continue to work remotely. More detailed information will be provided in the coming days and weeks.
Be kind, stay safe

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Hello everyone
Welcome back to a new term after the Easter break. I hope that you all managed to find some time to relax and take a break in what continues to be exceptional circumstances.
Throughout the Easter period there have been a number of important meetings that have led to further discussions around the teacher-led grading of qualifications, the security of various funding streams and the inevitable questions of when life will get ‘back to normal’.
As a College we have worked hard to support the NHS through the current crisis by agreeing training to take place at our Aberystwyth Campus and providing local hospitals with much sought after PPE equipment to supplement their current levels of equipment. This has only been possible due to the number of volunteers that have come forward to help – on behalf of the College, thank you. Also, we are currently having discussions with the Welsh Blood Service about providing a centre for them to operate in June, at the Graig Campus in Llanelli.
I am sure many of you will have seen the CARIAD awards that have been presented recently. Support for learners continues online and I am grateful to those staff who provided much need support to learners, in particular the most vulnerable learners, during the Easter period.
Post Easter both support and learning online will continue, but as time progresses some aspects of these functions will change. For example, formative assessment and other factors will be used to provide final grades for learners and, as one academic year comes to an end, we must prepare for the next intake of learners. There will be more specific information on this important piece of work in the coming weeks.
Overall, we are adapting to working from home well but I also appreciate that family commitments and caring responsibilities are difficult to manage in this working environment. Whilst I appreciate the challenge that these difficult times bring I hope that you continue to support each other, to keep in touch with colleagues and above keep yourselves safe and in good health.
Be safe, be kind.
Andrew

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
In relation to the proposal to cancel GCSEs and A-Level examinations for Summer 2020, the college has no detailed information at this stage regarding the measures that will be used to award grades.
Once we know more we will communicate this to you. At this time, it is important that all learners continue with their studies as normal, in the event that WJEC refers to attendance, submission of classwork, past papers and homework to form their judgement on the final grade to award to candidates.
We appreciate your patience during this difficult time.

Assistant Principal, Strategy, Planning and Academic Services
In response to the recent Covid-19 (Coronavirus) outbreak, we would like to reassure our learners that the College is monitoring the situation extremely closely. As a Senior Leadership Team, we are meeting on a daily basis to ensure that the correct processes and procedures are in place to ensure the best possible advice is provided to our learners, in line with current Welsh Government recommendations.
Our priority is the safety of our learners, employees, and visitors. In addition, we will do everything possible to ensure that teaching, learning and assessment preparation can continue during this period of uncertainty, following guidance from the UK and Welsh Government and Public Health authorities.
At the present time, there is no plan to close any campuses of the College. However, it does seem possible, although not guaranteed, that some form of closure of part, or all, of the College may be necessary, and this scenario is being planned for by the Senior Leadership Team. Should this happen, we will communicate with you via email, social media platforms and the College website www.colegsirgar.ac.uk or www.cerdigion.ac.uk as soon as a decision is made. We would like to remind you to
check these electronic platforms and your College email account regularly so that you can be kept up-to-date with any developments.
At present, if you are well, you should attend all timetabled teaching and placements unless you are informed otherwise by your course or personal tutor.
If you are on a placement, and your placement provider closes, please contact your course tutor as soon as possible so that measures can be put in place to support your studies.
To ensure that learners, staff and visitors are not exposed to further unnecessary risks, we have suspended all international College planned trips and international placements from the College. We have also taken the decision to suspend new European students attending the College on placements.
Activities within the UK will continue to be discussed on a case by case basis and subject to the latest Welsh Government information.
At present, we would strongly encourage that you continue to plan and prepare for your approaching examinations and assessments.
We will inform you as soon as possible, should Examination Board and/or Awarding Body requirements or arrangements change.
Learners who feeling unwell and / or have underlying health conditions
Learners who have weakened immune systems or underlying chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes or heart disease and are concerned about coronavirus should continue to take their normal precautions and may wish to contact their GP.
If you have concerns that you may have the coronavirus, you should follow the guidelines provided by:
Public Health Wales: https://phw.nhs.wales/
Public Health England: https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/public-health-england
We understand the impact this situation is having, and our thoughts are with everyone at this challenging time.
Please follow the advice of the Government: -
Stay safe and look after each other

Staff who are over 70, pregnant, or who have underlying serious health conditions that place them at greater risk are advised to work from home after discussion with the line manager.
Any other staff who can fulfil their function fully from home, should discuss this option with their line manager.
Staff should avoid all non-essential travel, including between campuses, and use digital means when appropriate.
Self isolating students should be marked as an authorised absence on the registers.
The Access centre, based at UWTSD, will not accept face to face clients, but will continue to accept clients through digital means.
Update The College remains open for students and staff across its 7 campuses, until we are advised differently by Welsh Government.
The College remains open for HE students registered with UWTSD. HE students housed in halls of residence at UWTSD can continue to occupy these.
Students must report any absence from College through their local campus office.
Plans are being drawn up for on line provision for all aspects of the College curriculum, if the College is required to close. These will be disseminated in the next few days.
The College is awaiting further advice from national awarding bodies regarding any contingency measures that will be introduced for managing assessment and examinations (including A levels and GCSEs).
The College hair and beauty salons, restaurants, dance studios, fitness centres, equine arena and 3G pitches will close to the public with immediate effect.
Contingencies are being drawn up for the stables at Pibwrlwyd. Owners will be informed that it may be necessary for horses to return to their homes if the College closes.
Anyone with a new persistent cough or high temperature is advised to self isolate for 7 days.
Any staff self isolating must inform their line manager and campus office. Any staff absent due to self-isolation will be entitled to full pay. Absence will not be recorded on the absence management system but staff should notify campus office in the usual way.
Planned trips abroad for students will not be going ahead during the remainder of this academic year.
Essential off campus visits within the UK may continue, but only where absolutely necessary for the curriculum.
We urge all students and staff to strictly follow the hygiene information that has been issued widely, which recommends thorough and regular hand washing with soap and water for 20 seconds.

At present, the College continues to operate normally for all students and staff.
The situation is evolving daily and the College is monitoring this closely. It is being guided by information issued by central government and the guidance for educational settings issued by Public Health Wales.
However, if any staff or students are concerned about their health or have recently returned from affected areas please contact NHS 111 for personal advice.
We strongly encourage all students and staff to follow the hygiene information that has been issued widely, which includes thorough and regular hand washing with soap and water for 20 seconds.
If, in future, there are any suspected cases of Coronavirus in the College, the management team will work with the local Health Protection Team and seek advice on how best to respond.
Any planned staff and student trips or events scheduled for the remainder of this year, will be considered on a case by case basis and in light of the most up to date advice issued.
An update on the action which the College is taking with regard to the COVID19 virus.
1. Cleaning
Solo, the College Contract Cleaners for Coleg Sir Gâr campuses have already instigated a more intensive cleaning regime in line with the Cleaning Industry recommendations. This includes using Antibac sprays on "hotspots" ,which are door handles and push plates (particularly metal fittings). Toilet areas are continuing to be cleaned as per normal spec - there is no additional cleaning required for such areas. Currently there is no requirement for any deep cleaning however this will be reviewed if there is a confirmed case of COVID 19 in the College. At Coleg Ceredigion campuses, door handles and push plates are being cleaned with anti bac products.
Solo are not responsible for cleaning desks and IT equipment Ideally these should be regularly wiped down with anti bac wipes. Gym / Fitness equipment should also have a similar cleaning regime. Wipes are currently out of stock - this is the position with all suppliers across the entire country.
2. Hand Sanitisers
The College has been able to place an order for sanitiser foam gel dispensers. It is the intention that these units will be placed at main door entrances and Refectories. Hopefully these will be with us without too much delay.
3. Posters
Bilingual Information Posters are in the process of being produced and will be issued to all campuses.
4. Plasma Screens
A Public Health video clip on awareness of COVID 19 and personal hygiene will be played on college reception plasma screens. In line with Public Health Wales information, the most effective action which can be taken is for everyone to ensure that they wash their hand thoroughly in hot soapy water frequently throughout the day and also to be responsible for high standards of personal hygiene particularly when coughing / sneezing.
At present, the College is operating normally for students and staff.
The College continues to follow the global progress of, and response to, the coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak. It is being guided by information issued by:
The situation is evolving daily and the College is watching its progress closely. However, if any staff or students have recently returned from affected areas please ensure that you self-isolate for the recommended 14 day period and contact NHS 111 if you feel unwell.
The College is also reviewing the comprehensive advice for Educational Settings issued by PHE and if there are any suspected cases of Coronavirus in the College community, the College will act accordingly.
Any planned staff and student trips or events scheduled for the remainder of this year, will be considered on a case by case basis and in light of the most up to date advice issued by central Government.
Following discussions with Ceredigion County Council on Monday this week, we took the decision to temporarily suspend in-person teaching on the Llanbadarn Campus of Coleg Ceredigion. This decision was taken as a precautionary measure following uncertainty regarding the scale of the spread of Covid-19 within the community.
As there have been no positive cases of Covid-19 amongst Coleg Ceredigion staff and students, we will be restarting in-person teaching on the Llanbadarn Campus from Monday 5th October.
We appreciate that the past few days have been difficult for staff and students and we are grateful for your support and understanding.
The health and well-being of students, staff and the local community remains our priority and we will continue to work closely with the Council, University, NHS and Public Health Wales to limit the spread of the virus.
