As a college, we are delighted to announce that the new WJEC Level 3 Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales will be launching in September 2023. The Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales replaces the current Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate as an exciting and new qualification, designed to support our learners to grow as independent, effective, and responsible young people. The Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales will support our learners to develop as active citizens, ready to embark on a successful and thriving career or higher educational pathway. 

By completing the Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales qualification, learners will have the opportunity to: 

  • Further develop and apply skills in literacy, numeracy, and digital competence for the purpose of life-long learning
  • Build upon and present their planning and organization, problem-solving; creativity and innovation; critical thinking, and personal effectiveness skills 
  • Further develop and apply skills in literacy, numeracy, and digital competence for the purpose of life-long learning
  • Be given the opportunity to engage and thrive in active, creative, and learner-led opportunities
  • Further develop and apply skills in decision-making, problem-solving, and evaluation for the purpose of life-long learning
  • Further develop and apply their initiative, independence, and resilience skills
  • Work together and independently to take on responsibilities and engage with both our global and local communities
Programme Features

The qualification is primarily designed for learners aged 16-19 who are following a two-year course. It will normally be taken alongside another level 3 qualifications, such as a combination of A levels and/or vocational qualifications. 

The Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales can be completed in Welsh or English.

Programme Content

The Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales qualification is made up of three units referred to as Projects. 

The Global Community Project supports learners to develop and demonstrate the application of the Integral Skills whilst considering complex global issues and participating in local community activities (at least 15 hours) to promote citizenship in a sustainable world and Wales. 

The Future Destination Project supports learners to develop and demonstrate the application of Integral Skills whilst exploring future destination goals for life, employability, and citizenship in a sustainable world and Wales.

 The Individual Project enables learners to develop and demonstrate the application of the Integral Skills whilst planning, managing, and conducting an independent research project (extended written project or artifact).

Method of assessment

Assessment Each Project is assessed through a series of tasks that require learners to demonstrate their application of planning and organisation, critical thinking and problem-solving, creativity, and innovation, and personal effectiveness. When completing their assessments, learners will explore topics that are of relevance and interest to them within broadly defined themes linked to the United Nations Sustainable Development Agenda and Wales’ Wellbeing Goals. 

Assessment of the Global Community Project contributes 25% to the overall qualification grade.

Assessment of the Future Destinations Project contributes 25% to the overall qualification grade.

Assessment of the Individual Project contributes 50% to the overall qualification grade. Learners are likely to complete the Individual Project in their second year. 

The qualification is graded A*-E.

Entry Requirements

Whilst there are no formal entry requirements, it is reasonable to assume that many learners will have achieved qualifications equivalent to level 2 and will have developed skills in planning and organization, critical thinking and problem-solving, creativity and innovation, and personal effectiveness to this level. 

This qualification provides an opportunity to refine and develop these skills to a higher level. The qualification is not age-specific and, as such, provides opportunities for learners to extend their lifelong learning.
