Becoming a mechanic can be a rewarding career choice for those interested in working with vehicles and enjoy problem-solving.

This full-time programme provides an entry-learning route into the maintenance of light vehicles and other roles available in the retail motor industry. 

The courses use engaging and motivating qualifications that combine both skills and knowledge. 

This learning programme will help you to achieve a recognised vocational related qualification in light vehicle motor vehicle maintenance and repair. Delivery of the programme is undertaken in a purpose built facility, which has workshops equipped with the latest equipment and tools used widely within the motor vehicle maintenance and repair sector. 

During the programme you will learn to maintain and repair different types of vehicles, such as cars and vans, fit and replace parts and tyres and work on hybrid vehicles safely. 

The programme will provide you with an enjoyable, stimulating and challenging, learning experience with an emphasis placed on developing practical skills that are required by a modern vehicle mechanic. The programme also focuses on improving learners’ confidence, employability and entrepreneurship prospects. 

You will be allocated a personal tutor who will support you with your progress and provide pastoral care for you for the duration of the programme. 

Programme Features

As a full-time learner, you will be expected to attend college three days a week for underpinning knowledge and practical assessment sessions.

  • A strong emphasis on practical training on a wide range of vehicle technology
  • Essential underpinning knowledge giving the theory behind the practical tasks carried out
  • Visits to local franchise dealers, shows and manufacturers

All learners will follow a Skills Pathway in which they will develop their literacy and numeracy skills for employment. 

Progression and Employment

Progression from this programme would be onto a level two automotive course, working towards becoming a fully qualified automotive technician.

Method of assessment

Units are assessed practically in the workshop through observation of working practices and through written and on-line tests for the theory knowledge.

Entry Requirements

Three GCSE grades at A*- E in English or Welsh (first language), maths and science. Successful interview to establish candidate suitability for the programme.

You may be required to undertake a practical skills test as part of the interview process.

Additional Costs

All learners are required to pay an administration fee of £25 prior to enrolment.

You will need to provide your own stationery, and may also incur costs if the department arranges educational visits
