Pathway 3 - Preparation for Employment

This is an entry level, level one programme intended for learners with moderate to mild learning disabilities and/or difficulties to develop skills for working life or further vocational study at college.

Learners on this course will follow a varied curriculum that includes embedded functional skills of literacy, numeracy and ICT.

Learners will take part in a range of vocational activities including hospitality and catering, careers, creative arts, performing arts, sport and leisure, business and retail, law and forensic science, environmental studies and personal and social development.

Programme Features

The learners will access the local community for group work experience and individual work experience placements. There are offsite visits and visiting speakers from the world of work.

These opportunities give realistic practical sessions and embed what has been taught within lessons in college into ‘real life’ scenarios. Learners should be able to demonstrate a more independent approach to learning and knowing their rights and responsibilities.

Programme Content

The course will develop learners' individual independent life skills, encourage positive health and wellbeing, provide employability skills and community living. The programme of learning is designed to ensure that the learners have access to the four pillars of learning to help learners build confidence in everyday life these include:

  • Independent Living Skills
  • Health and Wellbeing
  • Community
  • Employability
Progression and Employment

Learners can progress onto further courses if appropriate. Students can progress initially onto Level 1 Catering, Level 1 Vocational Studies or Level 1 Animal Studies in Aberystwyth.

Other learners can go onto employment (voluntary, assisted or paid employment).

Method of assessment

The programme of learning provides a structure through which learners can achieve their personalised outcomes and reach their potential.

There are five stages to the assessment process. The stages follow a process that ensures each learner is given targets that are SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound).

STAGE 1 - Aims of the learning programme
STAGE 2 - Initial assessment
STAGE 3 - Objective setting

STAGE 4 - Formative review of learning
STAGE 5 - Summative assessment of achievement.

The process is specifically developed to support the personalisation of learning goals and measuring achievement at an individual level. Assessment consists of both practical and working knowledge. Students will also create a portfolio of evidence.

Weekly tutorial lessons help the learners develop their understanding of key themes and topics. Through our Tutorial programme we are supporting and promoting the work of Coleg Ceredion’s wellbeing team.

Here is an overview of some of the themes and topics that the learners will study and explore: Anti-Bullying, Hate Crime Awareness, Internet safety, Safeguarding, the Prevent Duty and Black History Month.
