Hairdressing is a popular and rewarding career choice for individuals who have a passion for hairstyling and helping and advising clients.

This level two part-time, exciting taster course is designed for those who have an ambition to work in the hairdressing industry. It covers all the basic hairdressing treatments and it will provide you with a good foundation from which you could progress to higher level courses.

Learning in the college’s commercial training salon you will develop the essential skills
needed for your career path as a hairdresser. During the course you will develop practical expertise and essential knowledge of the industry.

This course provides you with the practical opportunities allowing you to complete your assignments and put your skills into practice in a real hairdressing salon environment.

Throughout this course, you will be assessed through practical skills tests and written assignments that will run alongside the modules you are studying. This level two certificate includes the required elements to work effectively as a hairdresser including colouring and lightening hair, styling and dressing hair and working in the hair industry.

Programme Features

This part-time course is held over one day a week.

The college runs a commercial training salon which is open to the public and provides you with a real working environment, allowing you to gain a sense of how it will feel to work in the industry. 

There is an emphasis on supporting you in becoming an independent learner through individual planning, target setting and development. 

You will be involved in a thriving programme of activities including trips and events as well as taking part in national competitions.

Programme Content

The level two hairdressing  course consists of mandatory units delivered over one year part time:

  • The art of dressing hair
  • Client consultation for hair services
  • Follow health and safety practice in the salon
  • Working in the hair industry
  • Shampoo and condition the hair and scalp
  • Colour and lighten hair
  • Cut women’s hair
Progression and Employment

This course focuses on providing you with the skills and knowledge needed to progress to a higher level course, apprenticeship and ultimately employment as a junior hairdresser. 

Undertaking the right training at the start of your career is a great long-term investment in your career prospects.

Progression would be to a level two diploma course or in commercial salons or working in industries such as television, film, theatre and media, cruise liners, wigmakers, barbers and self-employment.

Method of assessment

As part of this programme the following methods of assessment will be used:

  • Practical examination
  • Continuous assessments
  • Portfolio of evidence
  • Written assessments
Entry Requirements

Suitability for this course will be assessed at interview however a positive attitude to learning a vocational skill is required. 

We require a minimum of four GCSEs at grades A* to D with two C grades, one being either English/Welsh (first language) or maths. Or we accept successful completion of a level one vocational qualification in a relevant subject.

Additional Costs

This part time course fee is currently £275 (band K).

You will have access to a range of equipment and resources at college but in addition, consumable products and a uniform will need to be purchased. This information will be given prior to your start date and can be advised at interview.

Various trips are organised throughout the academic year relating to the hair industry, of which you will be required to pay a contribution towards.
