Our hair and beauty salons are specifically designed for training purposes and have all the latest equipment and resources. Candidates will need to be highly motivated and be willing to work as part of a team. As a department we are keen to encourage students to reach their full potential by participating in both in- house and national competitions.  We also run enrichment days to include, affinage colouring, ear piercing, gel nail polish, hair extensions and theatrical make-up. You will also have the opportunity to attend trade shows, seminars, workshops as well as organised sector related trips.

You learn with your assessor through practical sessions, group discussions or assignments. You'll have access to a realistic hairdressing environment where you'll practise and demonstrate your skills.

The course units are listed in the programme description. Each unit contains an element of both theory and practical work. There will also be integrated numeracy and literacy work within the units as learners will be expected to carry out an essential skill in both these topics.

If you pursue a career in hairdressing you may gain employment through any of the following routes: 

• Salons
• Self employment
• Hotels and spas 
• Cruise ships
• Theatre and film

Practical work will be assessed using observation methods and product evidence. The theory work will be assessed with an online multiple-choice exam.

4 GCSEs grades A* - D with 2 Cs, one being either English/Welsh (first language) or maths. Or successful completion of a level one vocational qualification in a relevant subject. Mature learners without qualifications are welcomed and may be accepted subject to a successful interview.

All learners will follow a skills pathway in which they will develop their literacy and numeracy skills for employment. Students who do not yet have the necessary GCSE grades at C or above will have additional teaching and support to study for either GCSE or Essential Skills qualifications depending on prior GCSE grades.
